The Vampire Diaries and Gossip Girl: Different Series, Same Patterns

Since The Vampire Diaries have recently reached an impressive number of followers on Facebook (over 14 million), and Gossip Girl is still extremely famous in it‘s 6th season (over 12 million followers on Facebook and almost 2 million on Twitter), I‘ve decided to share some of my little observations about these TV series broadcast by The CW Television Network.

What‘s the point of comparing completely different TV series? What does the vampire drama have to do with the life of Manhattan‘s elite? Although at first it seems to have very little sense, the longer I watched them, the more similarities I noticed. And finally I think I‘ve found... THE PATTERN OF THE CHARACTERS. What I‘m trying to say is that both The Vampire Diaries and Gossip Girl consist of quite similar characters.

ELENA vs. SERENA

In The Vampire Diaries we have a very “clear“ good girl Elena Gilbert, and Gossip Girl‘s good girl is Serena van der Woodsen. If you‘d ask my oppinion, Serena is much more developed as a character: instead of being a typical good girl she sometimes makes some serious mistakes. Elena always gets into trouble, whereas Serena always MAKES trouble. However, now that Elena‘s become a vampire, maybe we‘ll get to see more of her dark side? :)

CAROLINE vs. BLAIR

The frenemy of the good girl – that‘s what both Caroline Forbes and Blair Waldorf are about. They aren‘t bad girls, however, the vampire-barbie Caroline drinks human blood, and Blair enjoys scheming and is a former mean girl of the highschool.

STEFAN vs. NATE

As for the guys, in The Vampire Diaries we have a completelly boring good guy Stefan Salvatore while in Gossip Girl Nate Archibald seems to be the best candidate for the position of the good guy. However he, as well as the good girl, sometimes makes some bad decisions what makes him a much more interesting character than Stefan.

DAMON vs. CHUCK

Although a vampire Damon Salvatore kills people for pleasure or out of hunger, he is capable of loving. Chuck Bass from Gossip Girl is also a seemingly bad guy, yet he also has a sensitive side. Besides, both Damon and Chuck have this mysterious vibe and share love for fancy alcohol. So that‘s what they are – good guys with some bad vibe.

Somebody else has already noticed this connection, check it out, if interested: http://vampirediaries.alloyentertainment.com/vampire-bait-pick-of-the-week-ed-westwick/

What‘s left?

There are some of the characters in The Vampire Diaries and Gossip Girl that match each other almost perfectly: the simple guy who has tough looks although is not very good at expressing his own thoughts (Dan Humphrey from GG and Matt Donovan from VD), the cute younger brother (Serena‘s brother Eric van der Woodsen and Elena‘s brother Jeremy Gilbert), the ultimately bad girl (Georgina Sparks in GG and Katerina Petrova in VD) and the ultimately bad guy (Klaus in VD and Bart Bass in GG).

I have put this all into a table:

Feel free to comment and disagree.

  1. I got bored of Gossip Girl Season One. Still watching GG really slowly .... I don't understand how people actually enjoyed the show... the fashions are chic, though.
